A World Without Compassion

A World Without Compassion

A world without compassion is like a tree without root. Any society that lack compassionate citizenry is a lifeless society. This can only be proven with time.

A world without compassion is akin to the world of ‘Cain and Abel’ which was characterized by envy, jealous and murder (Genesis 4:6-8). It is a world where babies are dumped in ‘chocked gutters’ and the masses watch unconcerned. It is a world void of altruism.

In a world without compassion, we would live in a state of delusion, governed by our idiosyncrasies to service our passion. Strife, envy, hatred and war becomes the hallmark of the citizenry. Nothing is done out of love in such society; everyone act on the basis of what he/she will get. That seems to be very devastating! Isn’t it? The poor is has no voice, no hope, no love and no future. A world without compassion is a dangerous world to live. “Could it be that we are living in this world?”

Our world today have not been able to put a halt to the most of the challenges/ vices plaguing us such as poverty, sexual immorality, drug abuse, theft, war among others. Fifty seven (57) million die every year out of starvation on planet earth of which fifteen (15) million are children. Every 3.6 seconds, a person dies of hunger. In Africa, twenty seven (27) million die each year because of malaria. Three (3) billion people in the world today struggle to survive on US$2 per day. Drug trafficking, forced labor, armed robbery, tribal wars, racism and ethnic conflicts are the prevailing norms plaguing us. Gun seems to be the means by which we get into power. In some countries, children are only worth the gun they hold in their hand to shoot. I asked again, “Could it be that we are living in this world?”

Our moral pillars are becoming weaker and weaker by the day. “What is happening to our world?” In my view, the moral perplexities we are dangling with in this 21st century are certainly rooted in the self. Most of us have become complacent of living. We do not have the heart for one another anymore. After all who cares!

Amos lived and preached in a time where the nation of Israel has been divided into southern and northern kingdom. The people were living in affluence, thus allowing their luxurious living to blind them of God’s promises regarding justice, mercy and equality. The truth is that, they were living in affluence but the means of distribution was not evenly distributed.

The rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer leading to a big gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-not’. In this regard, prophet Amos came to the scene to stir up their moral imagination for a new way of living and loving, since they have become complacent, lazy, or lukewarm in their covenantal commitment to God and to neighbor. The Prophet charged them and said, “Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria,” – Amos 6: 1. This charge is applicable today as it was during Amos dispensation.

The charge is for all who have forgotten their moral duty of visiting the hospitals, evangelizing to the prisoners, feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. In the quest of multiplying wealth, most people have become fools in a world without compassion.

The foolishness to the rich man who failed to show compassion to the vulnerable and the marginalized cost his life (Read Luke 12:16-20); the foolishness of anyone who imitates his lifestyle will cost him/her the same- his/her life.

Compassion is a force that binds us together as humans. It is the foundation by which the pillars of human life rest. Compassion gives meaning to living and enhances our well-being.

Some people enjoy gratification from causing pain and degradation to others whilst some, their gratification depends on self- imposed physical pain. The former is a sadist whilst the latter is a masochist. Irrespectively, let us take be admonished by the words of Nelson Mandela, “Our human compassion binds us one to the other, not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future”. Whichever way we look at it, to be human is to be compassionate. For us to live a dignified life, then there is a need to cloth ourselves with this essential virtue of livelihood- Compassion!
